In an effort to create awareness on hockey rules and a platform to encourage umpiring at school level in the State of Selangor, Selangor Hockey Association (SHA) is aggressively targeting teachers and student in schools not only to have an understanding of the rules better, but to create an opportunity to develop younger umpires.
The first phase of this key objective was achieved over the weekend of April 12-14 2013. Selangor Hockey Association worked with the Selangor Education Department (JPS) via the State School Sports Council (MSSS) had a 3 days 2 night Umpires Seminar for Teachers from all over Selangor. 60 Teachers who were directly involved in hockey at their respective schools were identified and invited to this Seminar.
The Seminar held at SMK Pengkalan Permatang, Kuala Selangor was conducted by Mr. Kanaisan Kanapathy from Perak, a recognized MHC Umpires Manager, together with P.Balamuraly, the SHA Umpires Board Chairman, covered not just theoretical session but practical and video as well. Attire for the participants was sponsored by Nestle Malaysia .
YB Dato’ Sri Subahan Kamal, President, Selangor Hockey Association (SHA) in his speech read by Kuganeson Poologasingam Hon. Secretary SHA, thanked the State Education Department for working together not only to create awareness on hockey rules but to help identify and develop new umpires for Selangor and Malaysia. To capitalize on the interest shown by the participants, YB Dato’ Sri Subahan Kamal challenged each teacher to identify one student from their respective schools to sit for the exam and SHA on its part will provide free training for all the students and teachers to prepare for the exam.
Kuganeson Poologasingam announced another an incentive from the Umpires Board of SHA – for every student umpire that passes the examinations and get emplaced, SHA will reimburse the umpiring cost and provide free umpiring equipment.
He also announced, as part of the SHA development exercise, the district level hockey clinics will begin with Gombak District, on April 28th 7.30am at SK Taman Prima Selayang. This half day program will involve all the coaches in Selangor and about 150 boys and girls below the ages of 12. The parents of these children are also invited.
Noor Azli bin Abdul Rahman, Asst Director, Sports Division, Selangor Education Department in his closing ceremony speech spoke of the growth of hockey in Selangor in the past few years and the contributions of the Technical Chairmen who have been aggressively conducting hockey development programs. Selangor is the only state with 2 hockey Technical Chairmen, with Azman Ali for primary schools and for secondary schools, Ibrisham Nadzri.
Noor Azli also thanked the SHA, especially President Dato Sri Subahan Kamal, for reviving the Selangor Hockey League and spearheading many activities. He said the programs organized by SHA especially in the development and competition areas have contributed greatly to the department and schools in Selangor.
